Consumer Guide on the Working Conditions of Restaurants Article
(The Actual Guide is here)
It's free and lets you know if the restaurant pays its workers sick leave, pays above the $2.13 minimum wage for tipped workers (thank goodness I live in SF), and whether the restaurant has a policy of limiting women, immigrants, and people of color to lower-paid "back of the house" jobs.
I remember when I was looking for work I applied at the Marriott to see if I could be a valet attendant. They were hiring for valet attendants and customer service personnel. I noticed all their valet attendants (that I could see) were men, and their customer service personnel were women. They were interested in hiring me in the lower-paid customer service position, but not as a valet. I still think it was gender discrimination.
I also know it's common for most spas to hire more women masseuses. I went to a NHI expo thingy and there were men masseuses who had graduated from NHI and were complaining because they couldn't find work. The spas liked to hire women.
I also recall countless places that I worked at that had women in the front of house and men in the back.
Enough to make me pretty grumbly.
