Storm City

All this week I've been ignoring my 6 am alarm and snoozing until at least 6:30. Which means I have to drive to work. (Think NYE had anything to do with this?) But each day I found that driving worked out better than if I'd taken the bus (although I like to take the bus because it gives me a chance to knit or possibly read.) For instance, one day I picked up speakers for my computer, one day I had a lot of groceries to bring home, etc.

Well, today was no exception. I was late for the bus, as usual, so I decided to drive. Now usually I can't tell exactly how cold and windy it's going to be because my weather check is a glance out the window and how cold my room is. But this morning it was completely dark and I could hear pounding rain. I wore my boots to work. I always feel something special when I wear my boots to work because I only wear my boots in the snow and so rarely that it feels like a special occasion. So I bundled up, grabbed an umbrella, and drove to work in the absolutely dunking sloshing rain.

I wouldn't have minded taking the bus and/or Muni, but on the drive home I was glad I was in a car. Lights were out so buses were backed up. Huge, half-tree-sized branches took up three lanes on Geary. There were broken tree branches (and by branch, I really mean they were the size of a car) littered all over the city -- on sidewalks, on streets -- and garbage cans were turned up-side-down.

It was surreal.

So I get home safe and walk in my house and it's all dark. The electricity is out! Not even my heaters work, so I tried candles. No internet, no movies, only podcasts on my iPod, just a chilly room, Lucky Charms, and a book.

Then my mom calls and tells me Muni had stopped too.

Since I usually take the N I might have been there all night waiting for it, so I'm happy I was too tired to be punctual this morning.

Anyway, not much of a post but have a good weekend.
